Sustainable Development and Environment concern
In every project both residential and commercial we should try to reduce environmental footprint due that project and try to promote sustainability.
Well let me tell you what is sustainability means first. Sustainability means meeting our today’s needs without compromising the needs of our future generation.
Sustainability of a project starts from the site selection. The site we are selecting should be easily accessible for community connectivity like banks, supermarkets, schools, fitness centre, pharmacy, place of worship, clinics, restaurants, parks and easy access to public transport. The above said is necessary so that we reduce the use of fossil fuels.
While construction the top soil of the site should be removed, then stocked and reused after the finishing the site work. Air and water pollution due to construction must be prevented. Construction and demolition debris can be diverted from disposal in landfills and redirect to recyclable recovered resources back to the manufacturing process and reusable materials to appropriate places.
Innovative water technologies should be used to reduce waste water generation, also reduce the use of household water and to recharge the ground water. This can be achieved by proper rain water harvesting. Recycling the gray water (bathing and kitchen water) and try to treat sewage water also.
Energy efficiency should also be our concern. Energy efficiency can be achieved by properly installing and maintain systems like Heating, ventilating, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC&R) systems and associated controls and Lighting and day lighting controls and Domestic hot water systems and Renewable energy systems (e.g., wind, solar). Energy efficient fittings and lights and equipment’s should be used. Renewable energy sources like solar heating panel for water heater and producing electricity can be used. Windows and doors should be properly planned and placed for correct lighting and ventilation.
Indoor and outdoor air quality of site should be maintained without causing air pollution. This can be achieved by using Low emitting materials in paints, adhesives, sealants and coatings. No smoking inside the premises can be emphasized.
An easily-accessible dedicated area or areas for the collection and storage of materials for recycling should be provided for the entire building. Materials must include, at a minimum: paper, corrugated cardboard, glass, plastics and metals. Facilities should be provided to sort the waste produced and kitchen waste can be decomposed and the compost can be used for garden. This will facilitate in the reduction of waste generated by building occupants that is hauled to and disposed of in landfills.
All we need is to bring a small change in our daily lifestyle to reduce waste so that less amount of it goes to the landfill that can reduce our carbon footprint. The three R’s – reduce, reuse and recycle – all help to cut down on the amount of waste we throw away.
Already existing trees should be properly maintained. New Trees should be planted and reduce the burden we cause to our mother earth. It’s every world citizen’s responsibility to protect our environment.
